Is Chiropractic Alternative Medicine?

Posted on: April 16, 2018

Chiropractic is often viewed as alternative medicine. Therefore, some patients do not try this form of treatment, thinking that perhaps it is new or has not been tested. This is most definitely not the case. There have been numerous studies on the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments. We will be happy to share their findings and discuss the significance of them during an appointment in our office. This will allow us to discuss findings that are specific to the concerns the patient has visited us for.

Why is chiropractic considered an alternative medicine?

This is an interesting question and ultimately, it comes down to the fact that allopathic medicine, what we refer to as traditional Western medicine, lobbied to become the primary type of medical care in the United States. By doing so, they control the medical boards and doctors are both trained and tested to meet the standards of a traditional approach to medical care.

The only reason it is traditional is that it is now the most common. Chiropractic is an alternative to this type of medical care because it focuses on bringing the body into alignment so that healing can begin from within. This is in contradiction to traditional Western medicine that relies heavily on the use of pharmaceuticals, procedures, and surgeries.

Does insurance still pay for it?

Typically, insurance will pay for some chiropractic care, though the number of treatments per year may be capped. To find out what a particular policy will pay for, call the insurance company or speak with our office manager for assistance.

Alternative medicine is less invasive

Anyone who is concerned about undergoing procedures or surgeries or is worried about putting pharmaceuticals in their body should know that chiropractic care is a less invasive form of treatment. In fact, chiropractic is entirely noninvasive. Nothing is placed into the body and the body is never cut open. As such, the risks associated with chiropractic are significantly less than those associated with traditional medicine. Likewise, there are no long recovery times after receiving a chiropractic treatment because the treatment is entirely noninvasive.

Does alternative medicine really work?

Absolutely. The health issues a patient is struggling with will determine if this is an effective way to treat the problem. For example, someone who has strep throat is still going to need antibiotics. However, there are other conditions where chiropractic should be the primary treatment. For example, a person who has suffered whiplash should visit a chiropractor for help rather than a traditional doctor.

Even when chiropractic should not be the primary course of treatment, it can help to speed healing as a therapy designed to augment the primary treatment. We have witnessed our patients experiencing improved health, well-being, and mobility by visiting our office for regular therapy. To find out if this is the right treatment for you, call our office and schedule an appointment.
